Marc Russell
BetterWallet®
Founder & CEO

About
M. Marc Russell is the founder and CEO of BetterWallet®, one of the most trusted financial literacy platforms in America with a mission to help first-generation investors build generational wealth. Born into Pennsylvania's foster care system and spending 13 years rotating through placements before being adopted at age 13 by a low-income family in Mount Union, Pennsylvania (one of the poorest towns in the United States), Marc's journey from systemic poverty to financial freedom has made him one of the most authentic and impactful voices in financial education.
After self-funding his business degree at Penn State University—begging for tuition money each semester while grieving his adoptive father's death in 2009 and navigating the 2008 financial crisis—Marc launched his career at Vanguard, one of the world's largest investment firms. Selected for the firm's prestigious Vanguard Accelerated Development Program, one of only 20 people chosen nationally, Marc received rotational exposure across four divisions serving institutional and high-net-worth clients. He became a licensed stockbroker (FINRA Series 7) and financial advisor (Series 66), eventually leading teams that consistently ranked as top performers in their departments.
Marc's Wall Street career flourished across nearly a decade at Vanguard, SEI Investments, and FS Investment Solutions, where he served thousands of households, managed high-value client relationships, and excelled in business development. Yet despite his professional success, Marc found himself $80,000 in debt and living paycheck-to-paycheck—a painful irony that became his catalyst for change. In 2017-2018, he made the decision to transform his finances, aggressively eliminating his debt over three years while simultaneously building his investment portfolio.
This personal financial transformation revealed a profound truth: the financial knowledge that changed his life was exactly what millions of first-generation investors desperately needed but weren't getting from traditional financial institutions. Marc made the bold decision to leave the security of corporate finance to launch BetterWallet—a comprehensive financial education platform dedicated to teaching underserved communities how to invest, eliminate debt, and build generational wealth.
Today, BetterWallet has grown into a movement of some 500,000 engaged followers across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms. Marc has helped over 200,000 individuals transform their financial lives through his signature Financially Bulletproof Investing Program, which has enrolled more than 2,000 students. His work has been recognized with multiple Plutus Award nominations and featured in Time Magazine, Forbes, CNBC, Bloomberg, Harvard Business Review, Essence, Vice, BankRate, Business Insider, and Nasdaq.
BetterWallet has also partnered with an impressive range of organizations, from Fortune 500 companies including JPMorgan Chase, Charles Schwab, T. Rowe Price, Ally Bank, Verizon, ADP, and Allstate to mission-driven brands like National Debt Relief, College Ave, AARP, Men's Wearhouse, HBO, and Consumer Affairs. These partnerships reflect Marc's ability to maintain credibility across both mainstream financial institutions and organizations serving everyday Americans.
What sets Marc apart in the crowded financial education space is his radical authenticity. Unlike many financial 'experts,' Marc openly shares his failures—the debt he accumulated despite working on Wall Street, his initial fear about investing even as a licensed advisor, his experience starting with small investments in single ETFs because he was afraid of losing money. This vulnerability creates deep trust with his audience, validating their fears while demonstrating a clear path forward. His 'meet people where they are' approach makes Wall Street investing accessible to everyday Americans, particularly first-generation investors and communities of color who have been historically excluded from wealth-building education.
Marc specializes in breaking down complex wealth-building concepts into actionable steps for people who didn't grow up learning about money. His content covers debt elimination strategies, passive investment education (ETFs, index funds, dividend investing), generational wealth creation, investment account optimization (Roth IRAs, HSAs, trust funds), avoiding lifestyle creep, and tax-efficient wealth transfer. Through his work, he connects with everyday people who have transformed their lives through financial literacy, making money a less taboo, more everyday topic.
Beyond his business achievements, Marc is a powerful advocate for foster care alumni and first-generation success stories. He mentors young people from similar backgrounds and speaks openly about his experiences in Pennsylvania's foster care system. His adoptive parents' example—despite their limited resources, they tithed 10% annually and hosted community cookouts every Sunday—instilled in him values of generosity and community that inform his work today.
Marc is passionate about systemic change in financial education. He emphasizes teaching parents how to educate their children about money, noting the statistic that most wealthy families lose their wealth by the second or third generation due to inadequate financial education. He advocates for building assets that generate passive income, implementing tax-efficient wealth transfer strategies, and breaking the cycles that keep communities trapped in poverty.
Professional endorsements consistently highlight Marc's unique combination of technical expertise and emotional intelligence. Colleagues describe him as a 'trusted advisor' and 'leader' whose 'genuine dedication to each member of his team earned him trust and respect.' Brand partners praise his 'rare mix of financial expertise, authenticity, and reliability,' noting that he 'truly gets what it means to meet people where they are.' Community members credit him with helping them pay off cars, build passive investment portfolios, and start investing for their children's futures.
Having learned from observing the 2008 financial crisis, corporate greed, and how predatory financial practices hurt everyday Americans, Marc built BetterWallet on the principle that financial education should empower people, not exploit them. His partnerships reflect these values: collaborating with companies that genuinely help people improve their financial lives rather than those that merely profit from their struggles.
As Marc continues growing BetterWallet, he remains focused on his core mission: ensuring that no one faces the financial barriers and lack of education he experienced. His history represents possibilities for countless communities. When people from foster care, low-income neighborhoods, or families where no one attended college see Marc's journey, they see a roadmap for their own financial freedom. Ultimately, Marc's personal story and professional work help individuals gain the knowledge, inspiration, and confidence to build generational wealth, breaking cycles that have persisted for generations.
